LINA CHANG is an audio documentarian and sound artist whose work centers around oral histories, family archives, and collective memory. She is the founder of Pansori Sound Studio, which continues the Korean tradition of collaborative storytelling that emphasizes the musicality of the human voice. Producing documentaries, radio, podcasts, print publications, mixtapes, sound baths, and sound-based installations, Chang invites her collaborators to share their personal history to uncover lost or forgotten fragments of cultural inheritance and ancestry. 

She has produced podcasts and radio features for the BBC World Service, iHeartMedia, and Sony and&#38;nbsp;led the oral history project,&#38;nbsp; Our Streets, Our Stories at the Brooklyn Public Library. For the British Library, she supported The Making of Black Britain, an oral history project founded by British journalist and presenter, Diane Louise Jordan, where the project featured a diversity of voices based on the question of what it means to be British today. Back at NPR, she trained as a sound archivist among an amazing team of librarians, historians, software engineers and archivists.

Hennah Draaibaar sets out to investigate a family legend she'd heard whispers of as a girl, that of her grandmother making a huge gold discovery in the 1930s which briefly made her the richest woman in Suriname. Could it be that a family just a few decades out from under the yoke of slavery had found unimaginable riches buried beneath their feet? Hennah's digging uncovers the murky history of the gold’s path down the years and reveals a portrait of the Golden Lady of Suriname that was even more precious.

Jokbo (족보) is a compilation of dream sequences, memories and voices that are based on my family tree - hailing from the Korean traditional practice of genealogy books. Fragments of people from my own family that I’ve never met and from those that are present in my life are recollected through audio notes detailing my dreams of them over the course of the year, and through EVP recordings. The audio sequences were generated randomly in the live performance, and broadcasted through HAM radio.

To Become Weightless, 내가 죽어야 한다면 is a re-enactment
of the historical narratives surrounding the construction of
symbols for peace. The work draws on the Peace Palace
and it’s foundation stone in The Hague - along with the
parallel history of three Korean emissaries who first came to
The Hague in 1907 for the Second Hague Peace
Conference. Seeking support for Korea’s independence
under Japanese colonization, they were ultimately denied
entry. By overlaying the names of the denied Korean
emissaries onto the foundation stone, the act serves as an
exercise in remembrance and re-enacting the past to
uncover discrepancies in how we choose to remember.

From the library terrace, daily broadcast sessions were carried out using a yagi antenna and a HAM amateur operator radio set. The microphone was fashioned with a cartridge needle, to pick up the surface of pulp panels.&#38;nbsp;


The location of the broadcast was transcribed in binary code, allowing two states in form: an absence in mark, and the existence of one. Both the gaps in between and the grooves became a signifier and an occupation of place.&#38;nbsp;

The needle became a scribe that manifested the past through a form of re-tracing, as it dragged along the contours of the surface. The signal from the needle was then broadcasted through an antenna, suspending embedded pulp into electromagnetic radio waves. &#38;nbsp;The transmission was carried out through 453.6875 MHz, allowing signal to travel past the ionosphere and into space.&#38;nbsp;The reverse film of the surface that was originally broadcasted with. The engraved symbols later embed itself onto the wet pulp after drying.

A binaural recording was produced while walking around the British Museum, exploring the site as a space of entering the past

The recording was continuously transmitted from within the pulp tower, where the panel against the wall received the signal through a bone transducer. This allowed the paper to act as a conduit for a vibrational surface, allowing sound to manifest - from the past into the presence of the now. &#38;nbsp;

A re-enactment of Plato’s Cave was conducted within the constructed space, where the disembodied voice of Michelangelo was channeled through the airwaves. FM radios were placed behind the stairs, and a transmitter was hidden in sight - broadcasting a trace of a lost voice.The floors were painted and designed based on Plato’s Analogy of the Divided Line.&#38;nbsp;

A prototype of a phonograph’s potential modern function was fabricated based on the original Edison Wax Cylinder design. The wheel was coated with wax, picking up the remants and grooves of it’s previous location. The needle placed against the wheel allowed instant playback, as the user navigates in space with the device.&#38;nbsp;


The needle was connected to a pre-amplifier, allowing an amplification and an interpretation of the marks along the wax surface.&#38;nbsp;
